Finding Books (and more) in the Online Catalog

Materials on Native American history can be found in the 970.1 area of the collection. Native American mythology is located in 398 and Native American religion in 299.

The term "Native Americans" is not a subject heading in the catalog. A subject search for this phrase results in the following message: "Native Americans" is not used in this library's catalog. Indians of North America is used instead.

Useful subheadings under this subject heading are: antiquities, biography, civil rights, folklore, government relations, history, legends, pictoral works, religion and mythology, social conditions, social life and customs, treaties, wars.

Subject headings may be subdivided by place and/or time period:

Whole books on a specific tribe can be located by searching the name of the tribe: Iroquois Indians, Algonquian Indians, etc. If no materials are available on the specific tribe, broaden the search to Indians of North America and look for a chapter on the tribe.

Provides digitized images of the following newspapers plus periodical articles published from 1740-1900. Search each newspaper title individually or search all of the newspapers plus the American Periodicals Series database at once.
