Finding Current Information on China
- Ms. Friends has recommended the periodical titles listed on this guide
- Periodicals are publications that come out regularly or periodically (daily, weekly, monthly, etc.)
- Magazines, scholarly journals, and newspapers are examples of periodicals
- Their primary advantage is their currency
- Periodical literature is available in full text in research databases, however, publishers sometimes "embargo" the most current issues, so they are not available in databases for a specific period of time
- The Internet may provide more current information than periodical literature because the publishing process takes time
- The disadvantages of the Internet are:
1) the need to evaluate every source identified with a search engine for authorship, currency, accuracy, reliability, bias, etc. because it is a self-publishing medium and
2) the sheer amount of information available can make finding specific information difficult unless you know exactly where to go - Through the publishing process, there are checks and balances on the quality and reliability of the information provided
- Books synthesize and analyze information from a variety of sources, including other books and periodicals
- Finding books on China during the last 20 years
The following periodicals are available for browsing in paper format:
- These periodicals may also be available in electronic format in databases
Check the electronic periodical list to find out--then click through to a list of issues of the periodical organized by date
To locate information on a specific topic in the database, use the search capabilties of the database rather than browsing individual issues by date
If you have more than one concept to search, use Boolean logic--example: China and human rights - Asian Week (Voice of Asian America)
- Atlantic
- Business Week
- Commentary
- Current History: A Journal of Contemporary World Affairs
- The Economist
- Forbes
- Foreign Affairs
- Harvard International Review
- Wall Street Journal (1 year ago- )
