Course Reserves

Faculty may place supplemental course materials on reserve at the Circulation Desk for use by students. Please see library staff to fill out a reserve form or complete the form in advance and bring it to the Circulation Desk.

Materials are usually placed on reserve within the same day.

Reserve materials may be checked out for 3-hour library use, 1 day, or 3 days. Please specify the loan period on the form.

There is no limit to the number of items that may be placed on reserve, but please consider what the students will actually be using.

Materials owned by faculty will be returned at the end of the specified reserve period. To make other arrangements, contact Julia von Ranson at 774-1496.

What can be placed on reserve?

  • Library or faculty owned books and media.
  • Periodicals owned by faculty that are not owned by the library.
  • Items produced by the faculty including tests, notes, lectures, homework solutions, etc.
  • Photocopies that are copyright compliant and meet "fair use" rules, keeping in mind "spontaneity, brevity and cumulative effect".

What cannot be placed on reserve?

  • Reference materials and periodicals owned by the library. These items do not normally circulate so that they are always available to students.
  • Any commercial, "consumable", material which is to be filled in and returned to faculty, including workbooks, test sheets and course packs may not be placed on reserve due to copyright law.
  • Materials owned by other libraries.
  • Photocopies that were on reserve in a previous semester without obtaining copyright permission.

For copyright questions, consult the information provided under For Faculty or visit the University of Texas "Crash Course in Copyright".

Department Reserves

If various department members will be using the same item in the same time frame, we request that the item be check out to the department library record rather than to an individual faculty member.

An additional copy or two may be placed on course reserve at the Circulation Desk to ensure that it is available for others to use.

Departments are encouraged to provide the library with a list of frequently used materials so that the library may purchase additional copies for the reserve shelf.

For questions regarding course reserves or copyright compliance contact Julia von Ranson at 774-1496.
