Plagiarism

"Plagiarism is the use of another person's ideas or work without proper acknowledgement" (DA to Z, p. 6). According to the MLA Handbook for Writers of Research Papers, 6 ed., there are two types of wrongs relating to plagiarism:

  • Using another person's ideas, information, or expressions without acknowledging that person's work (intellectual theft)
  • Passing off another person's ideas, information, or expressions as your own (fraud)

Plagiarism also exists if a student receives outside help, such as proofreading or editing, from parents, proctors, tutors, classmates or others without acknowledging it.

Students must receive a zero grade for any assignment in which plagiarism occurs.
