Copyright & Course Reserves

Materials placed on reserve, including books, media and articles, must contain a notice of copyright, which identifies the copyright owner, and date of publication. In the case of an entire book, video, or recording, that information is generally part of the "packaging".

Photocopied articles must adhere to the fair use principles of spontaneity, nature, brevity and cumulative effect.

Copyright permission is required for these reserve materials:

  • Single photocopy, on reserve for multiple semesters
  • Multiple photocopies, on reserve for multiple semesters

Copyright permission is not required for these reserve materials:

  • Single photocopy, on reserve for one semester
  • Multiple photocopies, on reserve for one semester
  • Books or media - owned by the library
  • Books or media - faculty personal copies
  • Works published before 1923
  • U.S government documents (generally in public domain)
  • Course notes, quizzes, homework solutions, etc. that are faculty-generated

Obtaining Copyright Permission

It is the responsibility of the faculty member to secure this permission. Information on copyright permission is available at the U.S. Copyright Office.
